June Monthly Report: More People Reaching Out, More Support Being Delivered
Winter has certainly arrived, and we're seeing more people reaching out for support across a range of Community Link services. In June, as an example foodbank demand increased 41% from last June and 8% higher than May.
One of the highlights of recent months has been the warm welcome our Hāwea Foodbank pop-up has received. It's been great to see local residents embrace having support available closer to home and reinforces how important accessible community services are as our district continues to grow.
We're also seeing growing demand for wellbeing support, with more people seeking help to navigate life's challenges. At the same time, programmes that foster connection, including Pet Therapy, continue to expand as more schools, organisations and volunteers become involved.
Connection remains one of the strongest foundations of a healthy community, which is why we're partnering with Queenstown Lakes Libraries and Welcoming Communities to host our first-ever Welcoming Day.
Designed for people who are new to the area, but open to everyone who might feel "new-ish," the event will be held on Wednesday 29 July, from 3.30pm to 6.30pm at Community Link on McDougall Street, and will bring together more than 20 local organisations, clubs, services and community groups. It's an opportunity for everyone in our community to meet people, discover what's available in the Upper Clutha and build the connections that help turn a place to live into a place to belong. Whether you're looking for support, keen to volunteer, interested in joining a local group, or simply want to meet new people, we'd love to see you there.
After all, one of the things that makes the Upper Clutha special is the willingness of people to welcome others, lend a hand and help build a stronger community together.
