Meet Diana: The Heart Behind Community Cooking

When Diana Manson took over Community Link's Community Cooking Group, she wasn't stepping into unfamiliar territory.

After a career with QLDC Parks and Reserves and a lifelong interest in both food and people, leading the group felt like a natural next step.

What Diana enjoys most isn't necessarily the cooking itself, although she certainly loves seeing people learn new skills. It's watching confidence grow, friendships form, and conversations unfold around the kitchen bench.

"It's amazing to see what happens when people come together around food," she says. "People arrive not knowing each other and before long they're sharing ideas, recipes, stories and a meal."

Since starting with the group, Diana has watched participants tackle recipes they never thought they'd try, from sushi making to cake decorating. Some arrive with plenty of kitchen experience, while others are learning as they go.

What matters is that everyone feels welcome.

One of Diana's favourite examples of the group's spirit came when she was away and the recipe for the day hadn't made it to the kitchen. Rather than giving up, the group searched online using the ingredients they had on hand and created something completely new.

"They just got on with it," she laughs. "Everyone had fun and lunch still happened."

For Diana, that's what the Community Cooking Group is all about. It's not about perfection. It's about curiosity, resourcefulness and creating a space where people feel comfortable having a go.

Over the years she's seen friendships develop, connections made and confidence grow. Sometimes that happens over a shared chopping board. Sometimes it's as simple as a conversation on the way home. When one participant recently needed a ride back to Luggate after Community Cooking Group, another happened to be heading the same way. A simple lift home became the start of a new friendship.

"Food brings people together," Diana says. "The cooking is important, but it's the connections that keep people coming back."
