Meet Sarah Stewart – Strengthening Community Link Support
As pressures rise across our community, Community Link is proud to welcome Sarah Stewart, a trained and registered Social Worker, to our Wellbeing Connector team alongside Ana Amador. Sarah’s arrival comes at a critical time when many whānau are facing increasing financial strain, rising living costs, and the added challenges winter brings. With Sarah on board, we’re now able to offer five-day-a-week professional support, helping more people navigate complex situations and find a path forward.
We recently caught up with Sarah to learn more about her journey and what inspires her work.
Tell us about your background and what led you to Community Link.
Sarah’s path into social work is anything but typical. Originally from Australia, and having spent 17 years working in Australian government policy across areas including aged care, mental health and suicide prevention, she felt drawn to do something more hands-on, something that could directly support people in their most challenging moments.
As a mature student, Sarah completed a Master’s in Social Work part-time while continuing her government role, an experience she describes as both demanding and transformative. During this time, she also worked with Canberra Domestic Violence Services, where she found the purpose and connection she had been seeking.
A move to New Zealand with her partner brought fresh opportunities. After settling in Lake Hāwea, with their two much-loved older dogs, Sarah registered with the NZ Social Work Registration Board and stepped into her “dream job” as a Medical Social Worker at Dunstan Hospital. That experience has given her valuable insight into rural healthcare and the realities facing local communities, ultimately leading her to Community Link.
What excites you most about joining Community Link?
“Being part of the Wanaka community during the week has helped me connect in a deeper way,” Sarah says. “In just a few weeks, I’ve learned so much. It’s a lovely balance.”
What makes Community Link special?
For Sarah, it’s the warmth and connection. “There’s a real openness here. The way Community Link brings people and services together, it’s thoughtful, collaborative, and incredibly effective.”
What’s your proudest achievement?
Moving countries and stepping into frontline social work has been transformational. “It pushed me beyond my comfort zone and showed me what I’m capable of. I’ve grown in confidence and found deep purpose in serving the community.”
Who has influenced your career?
“Every manager, supervisor and colleague has shaped me in different ways, always offering professionalism, guidance, and grounded leadership.”
Something fun about you?
Sarah took up skiing in her 40s, something she never thought she’d do. “It’s a great reminder that perseverance and simply showing up can lead to incredible outcomes.”
