Pumpkin Power

This summer join us to grow a resilient and nutritious vegetable for yourself, your neighbour or the community. At harvest time we are planning a community Pumpkin Power event to celebrate the humble pumpkin.

Free Pumpkin seeds available from Grow Wanaka, Hãwea Food Forest, Community Link, Wanaka and Lake Hawea Library.

How Do I Grow A Pumpkin?

Plant:

In Spring - plant seeds indoors in seed raising or potting mix ready to plant outside once the danger of frost has passed. Late November you are ready to plant them outside in a sunny spot with some compost.

Pamper:

Feed your plants with liquid fertiliser or a side-dressing of compost mid-season. Train plants up a fence or trellis if space is a concern. Once you have three small pumpkins on the vine, pinch off the growing tip. This will allow the plant to put all it's energy into growing large, healthy pumpkins.

Pick:

Harvest your pumpkins after the first frost in Autumn. Make sure you leave the stem attached. Leave in a sunny sheltered spot to cure for 2-3 weeks before using.
