Survey launched to assess demand for peak-time shuttle between Hāwea, Albert Town and Wānaka
A new community survey has been launched to understand demand for a peak-time shuttle service connecting Hāwea, Albert Town and Wānaka, responding to growing concerns about transport affordability and rising fuel costs.

Community Link has heard repeatedly from residents that the cost of getting to and from work is placing increasing pressure on household budgets, with fuel prices making daily commuting harder to sustain for some in the community. The survey aims to explore whether a peak-time shuttle could provide a practical, affordable alternative for commuters while helping reduce traffic volumes and emissions.
The survey asks people about their current travel patterns, interest in using a shuttle at peak times, and what would make the service viable and convenient enough to replace car trips.
“This survey is a direct response to what people have been telling us,” Said Kate Murray, General Manager, Community Link “Fuel costs and transport access are real issues right now, and we want to understand whether a peak-time shuttle could genuinely help ease the burden for workers and families.”
The survey builds on learnings from earlier community‑led shuttle trials in the Upper Clutha, which received strong community support and very positive passenger feedback. Those trials showed that while people valued the service, frequency and timing are critical, particularly for commuters travelling at peak times.
Feedback from this survey will help determine whether there is sufficient demand to move forward. If the response is positive, Community Link would look to move quickly to get a peak‑time shuttle service up and operational within the next few weeks.
The survey is open now and closes on Sunday, 10 May. It takes approximately five minutes to complete, and community members are encouraged to take part whether or not they currently use shared or public transport.
